Prince Endymion - Sailor Moon Cosplay

Description

"Guided by the light of the moon, we will meet again and again."

Character : Prince Endymion
Series : Sailor Moon (La Reconquista Musical)
Construction Hours : 75-80

WHY : Sailor Moon is one of my favorite fandoms, but it's seriously lacking of cool male characters. I didn't like the idea of being Tuxedo Mask, but Prince Endymion's design really enticed me! I made this for MechaCon 2014 to attend the Moonlight Rendezvous Ball as Prince Endymion.

HOW: It was really hard to get a good reference of his design! In the Manga it is constantly changing, and in the anime he is only breifly seen from the waist up and in low detail far away shots. Of all the reincarnations the La Reconquista Musical version was the most beautiful, and I incorporated most of it's design into my final costume.
I started by making the armor. I took a note from the oldschool cosplayers and made it completely out of foam. Foam mats were cut apart in patterns and formed with a heat gun into the desired shape until I had Pauldrons, Gauntlets and Greaves. I then took stretch metallic vinyl and stretched it over each individual piece, securing it with contact cement to give it that "real metal look". From there I had a "metal" armor base to build onto and add borders and decora. After each piece was made I added my own lights and shadows before aging them. I really wanted the costume to reflect a lot of light and be very shiny!
The sewing came next, I made the undersuit fairly quickly, in about a day. I had a bodysuit pattern from my BeastBoy cosplay and modified it to match Endymion's undersuit. There is a lot of striping! I went through about twelve spools of silver ribbon. It's kind of sad because in the end you don't even see 80% of the striping I put into it because of the bulky armor haha. The bodysuit is entirely made out of twill for strength, backed with interfacing along the chest and has a velvet accent fabric in some areas.
The cape came after as well as the cape pins. The red fabric was a really pretty brocade I found and forced into this costume, the flower pattern on it isn't canon at all but I love the way it looks. I sewed little loops onto my bodysuit for the cape to latch onto. You don't see them because the cape pins do a great job at hiding those loops.
The Boots took a whole day themselve and there's hardly a good picture of them. They were made out of pleather (sexy haha) and go over a pair of Doc Marten's. I used silver PVC and ribbon for accent marks on them.
Last thing is the sword, literally. I contemplated not making one because Endymion never uses the thing and the sword he DOES use is suuuuper boring looking. I ended up making the sword a day before my flight out to the Convention and then finished painting it the night before MechaCon. It is made out of seperating PVC pipes (for travel) and foam boards. It's also pumped full of expanding foam for support and was detailed in craft foam. It's a pretty little thing, but looks nothing like Endymion's sword and thank goodness for that.

THOUGHTS: While I never did compete in this costume, I get so happy looking at it. As of now it's one of the most detailed and intricate costumes I've made and I feel like a real Prince walking around in it. I don't see myself making any more Sailor Moon costumes, so this was a good finale until I get a creative itch for it.
I was suprised that people recognized me in the costume, Endymion hardly appears in the series and while the costume is iconic I did go a bit off-canon in some areas. It's definetly the costume I'm most proud of as of now and I'm sure I'll get a lot of wear out of it.
Here's to 20 more years of Sailor Moon, my fellow Moonies!

My sword isn't seen on this DeviantArt shot, so I guess that part is a bit pointless haha.
